Outreach Programs < go back to Our Ministries

Second Congregational Church takes Christ’s call “to go to all the world” with utmost seriousness. We believe that along with study of the Bible and a regular prayer and worship life, involvement in outreach to those in need of God’s love is a central, spiritual discipline. Along with our generous financial support of over two-dozen local, national, and international missions, Second Church has been instrumental in the establishment of Connecticut Friends of Bosnia, a respected relief agency that helps to build new lives for the still many remaining victims of that country’s civil war. Heartcare International, a nationally recognized program where doctors, nurses, and others travel to Central America and the Caribbean to perform open-heart surgery on dozens of children and youth with severe cardiological problems, was birthed through Second Church. It still has its offices in the church, and is considered an important part of our outreach ministries.

Recently, the leadership of the church has turned to expanding the “hands-on” component of our wider mission efforts. We believe that in being personally involved in mission we are profoundly touched by the Holy Spirit. We also seek to make as many of our “hands-on” efforts intergenerational in their makeup. While many of our groups (youth, women, men) have selected mission projects for their group’s members, most of our mission ministries are done in groups expressing the broad diversity of our membership and the wider community. These mission efforts are open to community participation. Here are some of these “hands-on” mission opportunities.

  • Twice-a-month food preparation and serving at Stamford Men’s Shelter, Pacific House
  • Regular outreach at The University Soup Kitchen in New York City
individual participation in helping families in Bosnia through traveling to that country
  • Two summer national mission opportunities to work in home building and renovation or other outreach ministries
  • A yearly Habitat for Humanity work camp to Central or South America
    involvement in tutoring programs
  • Observer participation in Heartcare International trips
  • Prayer Shawl Ministry as an outreach tool for those who are ill or grieving

We invite all who seek to help those in greatest need in our world to be part of our outreach ministry. If you'd like more information on any of these programs or would like to participate, please Contact Us!
